It is the time of year for spring preventative maintenance appointments. And, with people spending more time at home, the comfort of a properly maintained HVAC system is important.

Here are a few best practices technicians can use to keep a homeowner’s system running smoothly.

  1. During annual maintenance, run the system and take all the proper measurements to verify its charge. Only connect gauges to the system if necessary. The shorter the hoses, the better.
  2. Wash and clean the condensing unit and only use coil cleaners if needed. Check the components of the air conditioner or heat pump, and remove any debris that may have accumulated, such as spider webs, dead insects or dead critters.
  3. Talk to the homeowner while staying a safe distance away. They may tell you about the problems they’ve encountered that could indicate a problem with the system.
  4. During these times, technicians need to take extra precaution for their safety and the safety of the homeowner. It is important to keep distance when possible and wear disposable gloves and a mask.
